Facts about Africa

  • It is the second largest continent on the earth (after Asia). Covering approximately twenty percent of all land.
  • It has a population of more than 1,3 billion people. More than 17% of the world.
  • It is the second (after Asia) most densely populated continent at approximately 43 people per sq km.
  • Three main religious groups are identified namely Traditional, Islam and Christian.
  • On the continent of Africa the population growth is in excess of 2% every year. Rates for 2019 was 2.52% in Africa as opposed to 1.08% in the World.
  • Life expectancy is low – with an average of 52 across the continent.
  • The African population is relatively young with more than half in some countries below the age of 25. It is reported that 41% of the African population is under the age of 15. 
  • The most widely spoken languages overall including second languages are: Arabic (mostly in the North), Swahili 100M, English 130M (proficiency can vary), French 115M, West African Pidgin English (a creole language) 75M,  Hausa Language 47M,  Yoruba 40M, Portuguese, 30M.
  • Largest Cities In Africa By Population: Lagos 21M, Cairo 20.4M, Kinshasa 13.3M, Luanda 6.5M, Nairobi 6.5M, Mogadishu 6.0M, Abidjan 4.7M, Alexandria 4.7M, Addis Ababa 4.6M, Johannesburg 4.4M. 
  • As a whole it has abundant natural resources, but much of its economy has remained predominantly agricultural, and subsistence farming still engages more than 60 percent of the population.
